Recycling Great Sports Memories!

Recent Quilts...

I just finished some really memorable quilts! One was a queen sized quilt made for a Toronto hockey gal that's playing this year at college in upstate New York. She was quite an accomplished player and had many winning jerseys, and jackets to make quilt squares from. On a couple jerseys she had signatures that I created into patches, then reattached them to the squares. I also created patches from the smaller logos on the fronts of her jackets. I love how this one turned out!

Another really cool quilt was made from a mix of roller hockey jerseys (they are usually so colorful and funky!), as well as ice hockey jerseys. It's a stadium size that can be easily transported and can be used to cover up at those cold rinks! This quilt was my donation for the AAA Amateur Blues auction that was held recently. The auction winner plans on using them for the wall in her son's bedroom.

It's now officially fall (almost hockey season -
my fav time of year) - let the games begin!

I'm finally getting back to writing - have really been behind in keeping in touch! Right now I'm on my way to Greensburg, KS, to visit my daughter, who is a summer intern for a construction management co. If Greensburg doesn't ring a bell to you, it's a town that was decimated by a tornado 2 years ago, and is being re-built in a totally eco-friendly way. Anyway, this 9 hour trip gives me plenty of time to catch up on things...

I've been extremely busy with my quilt creations, with quite a few unique designs for client's special occasions. I'm working on a gift for a 70Th birthday Mom from her loving kids and grandkids. It will incorporate personalized squares of ironed-on photos and writings, an embroidered poem, their deceased father's bowling shirt, children's college T's, grandmother's buttons, and more memorable pieces of apparel. It's lots of fun to work on,and I feel honored to be part of their project.

I just sent out two full-size quilts out of state to Florida and Minnesota for hockey graduates! What's really strange is that both clients,(who found me on the internet), and I have Junior hockey connections. It always amazes me how small the hockey world is!

Hope you have a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend!

It's been a while since I wrote - things are really busy in work and in general! My son is back home after a long hockey season and I'm loving it! Just when I started getting used to this empty nester thing...

Lately, I'm getting calls from people inquiring and ordering a quilt from out of town - Ontario, Minnesota, Illinois, and Florida. Today I received hockey jerseys from a Florida mom who wants one made for her graduating senior. It's amazing how a sport that your kids have enjoyed throughout the years becomes such a link in meeting others who have the same passion. I also just finished a quilt made from baseball jerseys along with T-shirts and sweatshirts for a local high school grad. I finished it off with green and navy trim and laces. Turned out great!

Just a reminder - there's only week or so left to order a quilt and get an additional 10% off.

Just got back from a weekend in Chicago - went to a 100 year birthday party! Amazing! It was for my husband's grandmother, and she's still pretty darn sharp. She also got a certificate from the president, which was pretty neat.

I'm finishing up on a quilt for a basketball player from Washington High School that's graduating this spring. It's a full-size and is made up of T-shirts mostly, but also features his basketball jerseys and his favorite St. Louis sports teams. He plans on bringing it to his college next year and decorating his dorm room with all his sports experiences.

Just got a call from a gal up in Chicago who would like a grad gift for her son too. I'm so glad people are getting these done early, for graduation is only about a month away!

I am really getting spring fever - love this great weather! Hard to stay inside and sew when I'd rather be out and about...

I have though, just finished a really cool basketball themed quilt for the winner of a trivia night silent auction. It's a grad gift. There's been lots of interest in gifts for the graduate - I hope anyone who's interested orders early - it's coming up soon!

Speaking of graduate, we're pretty excited that my son just got a college commitment to Dartmouth! He'll play hockey also and won't go until 2011(he plays hockey in Cedar Rapids). Great work And!

I'm now making a quilt for a gal who played high school soccer and it's exclusively T-shirts. Quite colorful and you can tell they were well loved. Those make the best quilts, in my opinion. So memorable!

Don't you just love spring? Especially, when we had a pretty brutal winter, by St. Louis standards anyway. It always amazes me how winter's over so quickly around here!

My daughter goes back to college (KU) tomorrow. Going to really miss her...she's such a great gal... But, GO JAYHAWKS!

I'm finishing up a really neat quilt for a client in Cleveland. Her son played hockey for the Barons, and now plays for Colegate. I also have a call from a gal in Michigan who wants an All-Star Quilt, but haven't received her materials yet. What a great invention the internet is - amazing how we can connect with people everywhere!
My next quilt is from a women who found me on Craig's List(another favorite) Her son played basketball for years, and wants a full-size quilt for a grad gift. I love making quilts that have so many memories! It never gets old. I have another quilt to make for an end of the year cheerleading coach gift. Can't wait for this one - have never done a cheerleading All-Star Quilt yet!

Soon, I'll be having a spring 10% OFF sale. Again, if anyone is looking for a grad gift quilt, and wants it by May or June, I'd advise ordering now, and take advantage of the sale.

Had a wonderful, hockey filled weekend in Cedar Rapids watching my son play hockey for the Roughriders, and then the US-Canada game for Olympic Gold! Now back to sewing my next All-Star Quilt product...

My most recent client wants her graduating son to have a stadium-size quilt made from his high school T-shirts and basketball jerseys. For sleeveless athletic jerseys such as his, I sometimes have a problem with void areas at the shoulder. In these cases, I have to add additional fabric so I have a complete square to cut. Also, since I was provided with both t-shirts and jerseys to be incorporated together in one quilt, I have to make sure that all fabrics are completely shrunk (before I get them). Any un-shrunk fabrics may cause puckering when the quilt is washed later. Of course customers can also opt to dry clean and avoid this possibility if they'd like.

The quilt will them be bordered with green and navy borders with green ties - his high school colors. I hope that his new All-Star Quilt gives him years of cozy memories through his upcoming college years!

In the last 2 days I've had 4 more customers interested in having an all-star quilt created for a unique and personalized gift for their graduate! One quilt design will be filled with memories of a successful battle with a childhood illness, and will be particularly poignant. Another will be a quilt made of athletic jerseys of sport events, from pre-school through senior high. Still another will have personalized quilt squares made by family members. Remember that this quilt can become a keepsake for years to come, and can be as personalized as your imagination allows. I would be happy to help you "brainstorm" your all-star quilt possibilities. Also - just a heads up - I have many parents interested in having quilts made for their graduate, so order now if you're interested as well!

Are you into recycling? Maybe someone that's just into being organized, and just feeling like you're running out of storage space for all those collectibles?

Memory quilts may be the answer! Let me make a custom All-Star Quilt that not only recyles your sports memories, but also alleviates another storage box from taking up space in your home!

Don't think you have quite enough athletic jerseys or t-shirts to make an entire quilt? Remember that you may have 3 possible choices that can be used per sports jersey/T-shirt - front, back (usually a number), and possibly a sleeve that can be opened up. Some jerseys, such as in hockey and football, may have smaller numbers or patches on the sleeves that look great as quilt squares, so don't discount that possibility. I am happy to spend time helping you to decide on the apparel choices and layout of your custom, unique, memory quilt. I understand how precious these memories may be to you, and do my best to incorporate them all in your quilt. I will also make sure any unused portions of your athletic jerseys/T-shirts are returned to at your request.

Maybe it's time to "Spring Clean" and think of more useful ways to preserve your collections and sports memories!

Crazy weather day - to snow or not to snow, that is the question here in St. Louis!Bet those grocery stores are packed with nervous drivers, when it hasn't even started yet!

Delivered 2 twin size All-Star Quilts and she loved them! I now am working on a stadium/lap size for a AAA hockey coach, which is made of some older, unique jerseys - should be a great one! I am also donating an auction item for a quilt to be made at the Marquette HS Baseball Trivia Night this Sat, Feb 6. I am working on possibly making matching pillows to coordinate with the athletic jersey or t-shirt quilt. I may be making bedroll pillows from hockey socks, so stay tuned...

Graduation is a great time for thinking about unique, personal gifts for your graduate, and All-Star Quilts make the perfect gift! Wouldn't they make a wonderful bedspread for your teen at college, instead of an ordinary store bought one? If you are interested, order soon - I have lots of interest in that direction.

Enjoy your weekend!

Hello again! I thought that I should tell you a little about myself and how I decided to get into the business of making quilts from athletic jerseys and T-shirts...

I began making these quilts for my daughter and son, who were in a various (and numerous) sports over the years, such as ice hockey, field hockey, golf, horsemanship, baseball, soccer, yada yada. Sound familiar? Instead of keeping their memorable sports apparel boxed up in my basement, I decided to make them into unique quilts. Since then, I've had such interest from other people who love the idea, that All-Star Quilts was born.

I've always loved making things from scratch, whether it be sewing, painting, or building. My parents were the creative types, musician-dad and underestimated artist-mom, and since we grew up in this starving-artist-type family, if we saw something we couldn't afford, no problem, we just made it. We were not allowed much TV viewing time also, which helped us lean towards learning to play musical instruments, sewing, reading and such - lost arts anymore! Thanks Mom and Dad! Things that I have also tried to instill in my own kids.

Ok, enough info about myself...I'd love to hear about you, and answer any questions that you may have on a possible quilt project that I can make for you. Please feel free to call for questions, or even your opinion anytime!

Today I'm continuing to cut out the athletic jerseys for 2 twin size quilts, using their back and front sections. I was told they would be used for their bedcovers - what a great idea! Another organized mom who, like myself, wants to get the old jerseys out of the closet and proudly displayed as a unique memory quilt! I believe they are for an upcoming holiday gift - Valentines Day!

Welcome to All-Star Quilt's new blog! My name is Nancy Simpson, and I am the owner and seamstress in the unique business of making quilts out of your Athletic Jerseys and T-shirts. Quit throwing your old Sport apparel in the garbage or storing them away in your basement! I can create a piece of artwork that can be used or displayed for years to come! Using your old (but memorable!)T-shirts and jerseys, I can use the front print, back print (usually a number), or open the sleeve if it has an interesting design, in cutting the quilt squares. The squares are then artistically arranged and sewn together, and bordered with a double color-coordinating fabric. All quilts are double batted for comfort, and come in baby quilt, stadium quilt, twin quilt, queen quilt and even king quilt sizes. The quilt also makes a unique gifts for your coach, team manager, birthday, graduation, or upcoming holiday! How about a fundraiser for your team? A memory quilt for a family member? Please visit my website for more information at www.allstarquilts.com.
